Tooth Fillings

Tooth-Colored Cosmetic Dental Fillings

Tooth decay can cause cavities, which are breaks in the enamel of the tooth. If left untreated, cavities can lead to further damage and tooth sensitivity. A filling is a common solution for repairing cavities and protecting the tooth from further decay. Our dental practice uses durable, tooth-colored fillings that blend in seamlessly with your natural teeth. We do not use mercury amalgam fillings, as we believe in using the safest and most effective materials for our patients’ dental health.

Are metal amalgam fillings problematic?

Amalgam fillings, also known as silver fillings, have been used for decades to treat cavities. However, they are becoming less popular due to their noticeable appearance and potential health risks. Amalgam fillings contain mercury, a toxic substance that can negatively impact your health if ingested or inhaled in high amounts. Although the level of mercury released by amalgam fillings is generally considered safe, some people may be more sensitive to its effects.

Another issue with amalgam fillings is that they do not flex with the natural movement of your teeth, which can cause small cracks in the enamel over time. These cracks can create an opportunity for bacteria to enter and cause further damage to your teeth.

At our dental practice, we recommend the use of tooth-colored composite fillings, which are a safer and more aesthetically pleasing alternative to amalgam fillings. These fillings are made of a mixture of plastic and glass, and they bond directly to the tooth. Unlike amalgam fillings, they can flex with the natural movement of your teeth, which reduces the risk of cracking and other types of damage.

If you currently have amalgam fillings, we recommend speaking with our dentist to discuss the possibility of replacing them with composite fillings. Our team can provide you with more information on the benefits of tooth-colored fillings and help you make an informed decision about your dental health.
